Hey Scott
I'm a guitarist looking for some lessons; reffered to you by Deen Anbar. I've been playing about ten years, have an undergrad degree in classical guitar but am really looking for something more in jazz, hopefully a grad degree and could definitely use some help before applying.

08/19/08 | mark Maegdlin
I heard that you really knocked them out at Eastern's Camp this year. Give me a call if you need me for a gig? Keep in touch! Mark Maegdlin

08/11/08 | Danny Sulsberger
Hi, my name is Danny and i'm currently at Eastern Illinois University. About 6 months ago I bought a guitar and have been playing it ever since, I've even thought of taking classes on the guitar, but I'm sure i wouldn't pass an audition, so i was curious about your private lessons. I live about 2 blocks from campus and have classes mostly between 9 and 1. please let me know, thanks.

08/08/08 | Mat
Yo, When are you coming eastward? the music sounds amazing...Freeze Dance. Shit is very bad. Hope you're well.

Matt

07/30/08 | Jason Domnanovich
I am a student at EIu and i was interested in receiving private guitar lessons. I spoke with Richard Rossi, who told me you may be able to help.

07/19/08 | Jason DeLoss
Scott,

I always considered you a better 2nd baseman than a guitar player but, times have changed! I was back in Sioux city for the class of 88 reunion and had a great time. Prince mfg was well represented by mr. paul pick! he has not changed since stubby taught him the poker swing!!! My sister just graduated from optemetric school in chicago and is looking to move back. I will keep you posted as I'd enjoy catching a performance. just wanted to say hello and wish you the best! If there is an upcoming gig in the southeast please let me know as i'd enjoy it..

07/05/08 | David Kovaleski
Hi Scott,
I caught you when you were in Sioux Falls and I was at the Saturday clinic. You were outstanding and I really appreciate your teaching style. I know this sounds like a dumb question, but what kind of guitar strap did you have? I have been looking for a really wide leather one like that and didn't get a chance to ask you. Please add me to your email list. Thanks again.
Dave Kovaleski

06/30/08 | Sean McCluskey
Can't wait for more stanky sessions in brazeale's stanky garage, man! By the way, the new stuff sounds beautiful...

05/27/08 | Sean Hennessy
Hey Scott, how's it going? It's been a long time - I hope everything is going well with you. I've been keeping track of you a little through the websites. You're in Chicago now right? We have a buddy of ours from columbia in chicago now his name is chris Graham he is a vibes player and is a talented musician. Have you run across him up there? You might keep your eye out. My brother kev and i just finished a new record and i would love to send you one. Email me back your mailing address and it will magically appear. See ya, Sean

05/26/08 | Kirk Vilhauer
Hey Scott, came across your profile on the reunion website and thought I would drop you a line. Looks like you have been pretty busy since high school. IF you are ever in Omaha give me a shout.

05/17/08 | Jeff Stocks
Hey Scott,

I hope you are well. I just wanted to drop a quick note letting you know I will be in Chicago for a couple of days in August--not sure of the dates yet. I would love to either catch you play or maybe even have a lesson w/ you. I feel like I am back far enough along that I won't completely waste your time! At least I can get through my scales in one piece again. Taking 5 years off really killed me, but alas....

I heard the first track off the new disc. Man is it killing! I can't wait for it to be out.
Shoot me a mail when you get a chance. I will let you know the specifics of the trip when I get them all nailed down. Hopefully it will coincide w/ some shows for you. I am coming alone (with work, actually), so no pregnant wife this time!

Take care, my friend. Talk w/ you soon.

jeff

04/21/08 | Mark Maegdlin
Yo, it looks like things are going pretty well for you :)

This month is crazy with 13 gigs for me. Give me a call if you get something. I am playing with Tim Green at Philanders every month, he is playing bass and I am on drums.

Mags out!

04/09/08 | Eric Klotz
Hey Scott,
How are things going? I have a gig on April 26th that my usual bass player can't do and I was wondering if you know of any electric players that might be interested. You can hear what I'm doing at www.ericklotz.org. The gig is from 9:15 to 10 and I'm willing to pay out of my pocket for someones time. Please let me know if you have any ideas.
thanks,
Eric

03/13/08 | CasT
Hey Bro,
I'm wondering if you ever dug that Wayne book up...and if so, can you send it back soon?
Thanks!

BTW, if you haven't heard it yet, check out the new Herie (grammy winning) recording w/ Wayne...Gorgeous!

Stay in touch,
DC

03/09/08 | Randy Gifford
Dear mr. hesse
I am currently a philosophy major at EIU, but I want to change to jazz performance. I play the guitar, and have been obsessively for the past two years, and it's the only thing I feel worth studying. I'm self taught, and I believe the only way I can take my playing to the next level is with your help. I struggle with playing sheet music, but I have no problem improvising in any key or mode. If you could find some spare time to maybe talk with me after spring break about audition expectations I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for your time,
sincerely,
Randy Gifford

02/28/08 | Lynne Humphrey
Scott, I am Andrew HUmphrey's mom. He met you at Jazz camp at Esterville several years ago. Andrew is a music major at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake , IA. I met our parents @ your uncle jerry's for Christmas. Do you play in the Chicago area? I though it would be fun to bring Andrew to listen sometime. If you have a schedule you can e-mail me that would be great. your mom told me you are going to be working inthe studio this spring. Can't wait to hear it!
Thanks,
Lynne Humprhey

02/03/08 | Mark Sabatino
Hi Sc ott,

I'm interested in talking to you abut private lessons. I've been playing guitar for nearly 30 years and have studied with s few people on and off over the years. I'd like to improvemy knowledge in theory, modes, scales, inversions, improvising, etc.
I appreciate your time and look forward to speaking with you.

Mark

01/29/08 | Andrew Wilder
Scott- once again i appreciate the help. the only weekend over the next couple of months that will not work for me is february 9th and 10th. Other than that anything should work. the band i am focusing on is called safe haven from oak forest/chicago il. check them out on their myspace if you are interested. i would recommend the song "orange" for starters, one of their staples ... however their sound has changed slightly as they replaced a rhythm guitar player with a keyboard.

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=58202346

once again the piece is focusing on the journey of this young band into the music industry. you will be my "experienced musician" angle if you will, discussing the difficulty in getting noticed by a record label and how much really goes into trying to make it as a recording/performing musician.

thanks again

andrew wilder

Hey Scott!

Just a quickie to say Happy 2008 & tell you that I've been listening to us from the old days at Oasis.
I am finallyu going thru a bunch of old mini-discs and digitizing what is good...and our stuff was.
I'm back in woodstock for a while - off of full time pop music at the moment.
I do hope we get to play again someday!
Best to you and the fam.

David CasT

06/27/07 | William Flynn
Scott-
Hello, my name is William Flynn and I recently attended your show at Touch Of Europe in Sioux Falls (I stayed afterward and asked you a bunch of questions). I am e-mailing you wondering if you could answer a question I had...
My question is... what is your approach to studying harmony? Specifically more advanced concepts: quartal harmony, Ect. Lately I've been getting the feeling that my comping sounds boring and predictable... I want to experiment with new concepts to make it sound more "hip" and modern, but I don't know what to do. Any insight you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot...
-William

06/27/07 | Jeff stocks
Yo! As I sit here working on various fourthsy and pentatonic things at 6:30, I thought of you. Just wanted to drop a note saying hey. Lots going on around here. Beth is now 6 months along, due in Oct. She is doing great so far--getting bigger every day. I am still studying w/ 'the guru' up here and it is really opening my ears. I am also taking correspondence lessons w/ Barry Greene. he is a great player and a super nice guy. There just never seems to be enough hours in the day to practice like I need and want! So how's things up in Chi-town? Miss having you around bro. Take care, jeff

06/24/07 | Richard Bornman
Hi Scott,
I am an Australian jazz gtr player, and a good buddy of Rodney Jones. He urged me to try to hook up with you while I am in chicago. I am here until tuesday next week, and am wondering if this sounds at all feasible. my only time constraint is that it would have to be an evening, as I am minding my son during the daytime! I am staying at the Homewood Suites downtown, btw....

hope this email finds you well,

Richard

04/19/07 | Tim Coffman
How did you get .org?

04/09/07 | Wylie Wynshaw
Hello. I'm a former student of Matthew Finck and currently studying at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Matt turned me onto a book you were working on called Quartal Harmony for the Guitarist. I'm curious as to whether or not you plan on releasing a published/bound version of this, possibily expanded? It's really opened up a lot of doors in my harmonic concept and my melodic sensibilities and I'd like to hear more about it.

Thanks for your time
-Wylie

04/02/07 | A.J. Love

Terrific site, Scott! Sorry about Raz...that happened while I was out there in August. They did a nice story about him and the club on KELO-TV. I Sat in half a gig with Pete's Quartet at Sweet Fanny's. He's playing great and has that kid Charles Sanders on piano now. It was a gas. All Best

i caught you at the h brain in jan maybe with greg ward. i really like how you approach the music! i had subsequently forgotten your name but someone on the kurt rosenwinkel board mentioned when i was asking about guitar teacher recomendations in chicago. i checked out your site which is really good by the way and really liked everything else i heard. so yeah id like to take lessons with and i am curious as to how much you charge.

a little about me-ive been playing for about 14 years maybe and know a fair amount and can play jazz but ive hit a rit lately and i think taking lessons with you could be good.

hopefully we can work something out.

take it easy scott

Hey Scott!
your music sounds great! I love your playing and your writing! Best of luck to you and your family.
I do have a question for you though.
When you were writing your instructional material in Finale, was there a way to resequence the page order? To move page 5 to page 2 for example without screwing up all the formatting?
I sure could use some good news
thanks Scott!
